Water is transported in steady state between two large
reservoirs using a pump and two pipes of different lengths and
diameters (see Figure (2)). The head losses in the system are
described by the relation:
hL = 0.018 ( L/D ) ( V2/2g )
where L is the length of the pipe [m], D is the diameter of the
pipe [m] and V is the velocity in the pipe [m/s]. Assuming an
incompressible fluid, uniform velocity profiles and the water is at
25 ◦ C:
(a) Determine the power that we will have to supply to the pump
to reach a flow rate of 0.5[m3 /s].
(b) Draw the energy and piezometric lines for this system.
• z0 = 50[m], z3 = 75[m].
• Pipe 1: L1 = 100[m], D1 = 0,9 [m]
• Pipe 2: L 2 = 1000[m], D 2 = 1[m]
•Pump efficiency: 74%
eau N pompe L₁, D₁ L₂, D₂ N
