Q5. The following results were obtained at failure from a consolidated undrained triaxial test with pore water pressure measurements on two samples of the same soil. Cell pressure 02 (kN/m²) Deviator stress 01 - 02(kN/m²) Pore water pressure u (kN/m²) 100 340 -40 250 410 64 (a) Determine the shear strength parameters c' and ' for the clay. (b) Beneath a foundation the vertical and horizontal stresses acting on an element of soil are ov = 400 kN/m² and on = 170 kN/m². The pore water pressure u = 50 kN/m² and the soil is the same as in part (a). Calculate the factor of safety against shear failure on a plane at 40° to the horizontal. (Ans. (a) c'=40 kN/m2, +'=26°; (b) FS=1.45)
