The simply supported steel plate girder beam shown in figure 4 spans 15 metres and carries a udl of q kN/m. The beam is a plate girder made up of two flanges 300 x 25 mm and a web plate 700x 15 mm. The flanges are welded to the web as shown with continuous fillet welds. Calculate the maximum udl q kN/m that the beam can carry given that the allowable stresses are as follows Oallow 120 N/mm² (i.e. allowable stress in bending) Tallow 70 N/mm² (i.e. allowable stress in shear) Each fillet weld has an allowable load in shear of 175 N per mm length of weld [16 marks] q kN/m 15m Figure 4 700mm 300mm Fillet Weld
