PWR utility orders 1000 kg (1 tonne) of enriched uranium from an enrichment provider that employs centrifuge technology that has an enrichment factor of 1.15. The required product enrichment is 5% U-235 with a tails enrichment of 0.25% and feed enrichment of 0.71% U-235 (i.e. natural uranium). How many enrichment stages will be required in a cascade of centrifuges such that the output enrichment of each cascade is greater than or equal to 5%. Then: a. what is the mass of feed Uranium material required and what is the amount of Separative Work Units (SWU) required? b. what is the mass of yellowcake (U308) required that will yield the required mass of uranium feed into the enrichment process? c. if the ore is mined in Saskatchewan has a grade of 4.2%, what is the mass of ore that must be mined to yield the required mass of yellow cake?
