Hgb
Hemoglobin, composed of iron, oxygen carrier. Determines
anemia.
What would cause the value to decrease in your OB patient? What
interventions would you do?

Hct
Hematocrit, used to measure the volume of packed RBC's found in
100ml of blood, expressed as a percentage. Hct is 3 x's the
Hgb.
What would cause the value to decrease in your OB patient? What
interventions would you do?

MCV
Mean corpuscular volume.
What does the MCV evaluate?

MCH
Mean corpuscular hemoglobin.
What is the the MCH evaluate?

Platelet count
Platelets function to initiate the process of coagulation.
Why would a patient with low platelets not be able to get an
epidural? Is it normal with your OB patient to see a decrease in
platelets after delivery? If so, why?

WBC
White blood cell. Part of the body's defense system.
What does this indicate if decreased? What does this indicate
if increased?

Polys
Neutrophils, respond more rapidly to the inflammatory tissue
and injury sites than other WBC's. The segments are mature
neutrophil and the "bands" are immature ones that multiply quickly
during an acute infection.
What's another name for poly's? What would cause the numbers to
increase? Decrease?

Lymps
Primary cells of the immune response. Reside in lymphoid tissue
as mature T cells, plasma cells or B cells.
What would cause the numbers to increase? Decrease?

Mono
Second line of defense against bacterial infections.
What would cause the numbers to increase? Decrease?

Eos
Increase during allergic and parasitic conditions, decrease
with an increase in steroids.
What would cause the numbers to increase? Decrease?

Baso
Have cytoplasmic granules that contain vasoactive amines
(histamine) and anticoagulant (heparin). Increase during the
healing response.
What would cause the numbers to increase? Decrease?

Chemistry

Glucose
Formed from dietary carbohydrates. Stored as glycogen in the
liver and skeletal muscles.
What would cause the numbers to increase? Decrease? Why is
important to monitor in your OB patient?

BUN
Blood urea nitrogen. Urea is formed as an end product of
protein metabolism and is excreted by the kidneys.
What is the function? What would cause the numbers to increase?
Decrease?

Creatinine
A by product of muscle catabolism, filtered by the glomeruli
and is excreted in the urine.
What is the function? What would cause the numbers to increase?
Decrease?

BUN/Creatinine Ratio

What is it? Why is it important?

ALT
Alamine Amniotransferase. An enzyme found primarily in the
liver cells. Differentiating between jaundice caused by liver
disease and hemolytic jaundice.
Why would you test for this in your OB patient? What diagnosis
is the physician thinking?

AST
Aspartate Amniotransferase. An enzyme found mainly in the heart
muscle and liver.
Why would you test for this in your OB patient? What diagnosis
is the physician thinking?

Albumin
A component of proteins. Increases osmotic pressure which is
necessary for maintaining the vascular fluid.
Where is this produced? What are the two main functions?

Uric Acid
End product of protein metabolism and excreted by the
kidneys.
Why would you test for this in your OB patient? What diagnosis
is the physician thinking?

Urine Protein Creatinine Ratio
Looks for protein in the urine. Healthy kidneys do not usually
allow protein to pass through the filters. Usually done via
catheter specimen.
Why would you test for this in your OB patient? What diagnosis
is the physician thinking?
