1. A 53-year old female patient is admitted from the Emergency Department (ED) with chronic renal failure on hemodialysis, a long history of diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. She complains of extreme fatigue, general malaise, and occasional confusion from her chronic uremic state. She admits to no known allergies.
The physical assessment reveals generalized edema including pitting edema of her feet and legs, pallor, and bronze-grey yellow skin. The patient verbalizes that she is normally anuric, and that constipation is an on-going problem, The skin of both her arms is crusted, and she is continuously scratching during your evaluation. She also complains of frequent nausea/vomiting, and an unpleasant metallic taste in her mouth.
