Truck Collision Imagine two trucks are moving towards each other and collide. The white truck has a mass of 4000kg, and the red truck has a mass of 1000 kg. They are each initially traveling at a speed of 5m/s in opposite directions, and then they collide and stick together, continuing to move together after they collide. 1. Use your intuition to answer the following questions (ie don't do any modeling, drawing of diagrams yet), and write a short explanation for each. Which truck will experience the change in momentum? Which truck will experience the greatest change in velocity? Which truck will experience the greatest impulse? Which truck will experience the greatest greatest force? Which truck will experience the greatest acceleration (acceleration is defined as change in velocity per change in time OR qualitatively as speeding up or slowing down)? Which truck would you rather be in during the collision? 2. Now draw a complete momentum diagram for this scenario. a. Use the "total" row of your momentum diagram to calculate the final speed of the truck and car after the collision b. Use this information to calculate the values of the final momentum of each vehicle, and the changes of momentum of each vehicle. c. Revisit the following questions. If your responses have changed, change them, and explain why, and justify your response: Which truck will experience the greatest change in momentum? Which truck will experience the greatest change in velocity? Which truck will experience the greatest impulse? Which truck will experience the greatest greatest force?
