Case Study Respiratory System –Mid - Term
SUBJECTIVE DATA: A 65-year-old man who has a history of
chronic cough (with scanty sputum production) and shortness of
breath is admitted because of worsening
dyspnea. He complains of shortness
of breath with mild activity for the past 3 weeks. He admits
a 40 year history of cigarette smoking.
OBJECTIVE DATA: Patient is thin and underweight and has a barrel
chest. He uses accessory muscles of
inspiration and pursed-lip
breathing. Expiration is prolonged,
breath sounds are diminished, and wheezing is present.
Respiratory rate is 25/minutes; heart rate is 110 bpm.
DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES: Frontal and lateral radiographs reveal
pulmonary hyperinflation, a widened
anteroposterior diameter, an increased depth of the
retrosternal air space, and a right lobe
infiltrate consistent with
pneumonia.
ARTERIAL BLOOD GASES; PaO2 52mm Hg; PaCO2 68 mm Hg
DIAGNOSIS: COPD
