8A) A team of researchers published results from a multicenter Randomized Control Trial, concluding that mammography screening reduces mortality from breast cancer by increasing the early detection of breast cancer. The researchers conducted a sub-study looking at the performance characteristics of mammography compared to the current gold standard, a combination of laboratory tests called the GoldTrue, using a sample representative of the national population. These are their results: Mammography + Mammography - Total Gold True + 29 11 Gold True- 5 700 705 Total 34 711 745 40 Calculate the following and provide a one-sentence interpretation. Present final answers in decimal form to the nearest thousandth (ex. 0.000) 1. Sensitivity Specificity PPV IV. NPV II. III. 8B) Imagine that mammography was then tested in a clinic for patients with breast-related diseases. During the test period, 141 patients participated, and of these, 40 had breast cancer. The performance of the mammography as a screening test for breast cancer in this population was: Sensitivity: 72.5% Specificity: 99.3% PPV: 96.7% NPV: 90.0% i. Calculate the prevalence of breast cancer observed among patients coming into the breast cancer clinic. Present final answers in decimal form to the nearest thousandth (ex. 0.000) ii. Compare the results in 8A and 8B regarding sensitivity, specificity, NPV, PPV, and prevalence, and provide a one-sentence explanation for any observed similarities and/or differences.
