In the Cadillac text, Chapter 1-2 discussed low tier jobs as the
real reason for welfare and Chapter 3 discusses stigma more
extensively, awareness of societal’s attitudes toward welfare
recipients, stigma symbols, etc. Testimonials of several women who
face stigma and blame for their circumstances are reviewed. For
this discussion question review the reading on low-tier jobs,
stigma, and revisit “Sarah" and “Dawn’s” stories. Use this
information to answer the questions in your post. Also refer to
Sheldrick et al., 2006: Welfare in Winnepeg’s inner city. Assume
you are a human services manager of a new federal program that uses
the human services “holistic” problem solving model (discussed in
this lecture) to work with welfare recipients to help them leave
welfare. You are designing the model around consumers who suffer
discrimination, judgment, stigma, and blame. Sarah and Dawn are
your first two clients.
