Q2. A solid prismatic bar with a circular cross-section (diameter D = 10 mm) and ari unloaded length L = 40 mis suspended down under gravity, held at the top with a pinned support. The material has a Young's modulus of 50 MPa and density p= 950 kg/m? a) Sketch the problem. Write out the formulas for the axial rigidity and axial stiffness of the bar. Calculate the values (making sure to indicate the correct units), and rework the expression for axial stiffness to show kg-force per m (assume g = 9.81 m/s). [5 marks] b) Neglecting the mass of the bar, determine the elongation of the bar when a mass of m = 80 kg is attached to the bottom end of the bar. Express the resulting elongation in mand percentage strain, and comment on the strain magnitude compared to the elastic limit for common engineering materials. (5 marks] c) Neglecting the mass of the bar, plot the internal axial stress and the axial strain along the length of the bar. With a Poisson's ratio of 0.5, what is the effect of the loading on the diameter of the bar? (4 marks] d) Explain how the internal axial stress distribution along the length of the bar charges when the self-weight of the bar is taken into account. Comment on the values at both ends. (6 marks)
