Q1(a) Consider the five vectors in Figure 1.1. Sketch and draw the resultant force for each conditions in Q1(a) i, ii and iii. Clearly label each vector and label the resultant force. i. C+D+E (3 marks) ii. B+D+E (3 marks) iii. D+C+A (3 marks) A Figure 1.1 Five different vectors.
(b) There are three same pictures supported by wires with different orientation for each picture as shown in Figure 1.2. The angle that the wires make with the horizontal is varied from 20° to 65º. Given that the weight of each picture is 1 kg. i. By calculating the tension in the wire for each picture, conclude how the orientation of wires affects the tension in the wire. (8 marks) ii. Suggest which wire orientation is the best in supporting the picture. Justify your answer. (3 mark) 20°angle with horizontal 45°angle with horizontal 65°angle vith horizontal Figure 1.2 Three same pictures hanging on the wall.
Q2 (a) Figure 2.1 shows the stress-strain diagram for four types of materials namely material A,B,C and D. i. From the Young's Modulus of each material, conclude their elasticity behavior. (4 marks) ii. Analyze which type of materials are ductile and explain the reasons. (4 marks) STRESS STRAIN Figure 2.1 The stress-strain curve for four materials.
(b) In construction of a bridge, a hollow steel column is exposed to a compressive load P as shown in Figure 2.2. The Young's Modulus of steel is 200 GPa. The length of the column is 3.43 m with 15.85 cm inner diameter. The load P is identified as 70 N and the maximum compressive stress should be 50 MPa. i. The shortening allowed in the column is 0.7 mm. Estimate the thickness of the column. (8 marks) ii. If a safety factor of 4 is desired, hypothesize the allowable load in the column. (4 mark) I.
