A stepped shaft is shown in figure Q4. It is subjected to a tensile load of 30 kN. Section A-B is a square section with cross section dimensions of 30 x 30 mm, and a length of 60 mm. Section B-C is a cylindrical section with diameter 25 mm, and length 55 mm. Section C-D is a cylindrical section with diameter 15 mm, and length 30 mm. The Young's modulus of the material is 205 GPa. А B с D T T Figure Q4: Stepped Shaft Calculate: (a) The stresses in each section A-B, B-C and C-D. [6]
(b) b [9] The change in length of each section, and the overall change in length of the bar. (c) If the Poisson's ratio is 0.3, calculate the change in diameter of section B-C. [5]
