Question 1 A 16 m diameter steel oil storage tank is to be built on the surface of saturated stiff clay. Within the stiff clay layer there is a 2 m thick layer of saturated soft clay whose upper surface is at a depth of 6 m below the ground surface. When the tank is fully operational, the flexible foundation of the tank will transmit a uniform pressure q, to the ground surface. During operation, the maximum vertical allowable stress at the top of the soft clay is to be 38 kPa. a) If the overall mass of the steel in the tank is 177.6 Mg, determine the maximum depth of oil that can be stored in the tank to avoid any over-stressing of the soft clay. The density of the oil is 850 kg/m². b) Determine the increase in vertical stress beneath the centre of the storage tank at a depth of 3 m beneath the ground surface when, (i) the oil level in the tank is 3 m; (ii) the tank is empty of oil.
