Question 2 A foundation is proposed, which will be placed on to a 4 m thick stratum of homogeneous saturated clay. A 24.5 mm thick sample taken from the stratum, was subjected to a standard one-dimensional consolidation test and the following results were obtained: Pressure Sample thickness (kPa) after consolidation (mm) 0 24.50 50 24.12 100 23.91 200 23.65 400 23.40 800 23.18 Unloading: 0 23.71 At the end of the test the specific gravity of the soil particles was established as 2.66. A sample of the clay was then tested for water content and the following results obtained: Mass of sample tin + wet soil = 256.13 g Mass of sample tin + dry soil = 217.60 g Mass of sample tin = 39.65 g a) Plot the void ratio against pressure curve and, from it, determine the coefficient of compressibility of the clay for a pressure increment of 300 to 450 kPa. (20 marks) b) Estimate the amount of the consolidation settlement of the clay stratum if a foundation was to subject it to a change of pressure from 300 to 450 kPa. (4 marks) c) If the permissible consolidation settlement for the proposed foundation is 25 mm, comment on the result you obtained in part (b) and describe any issues, if any, that you observe. (Assume that the immediate settlement in the clay due to the foundation equals zero.) (4 marks) d) Describe how the results from both Standard Penetration tests and Cone Penetration tests are used in foundation design. (5 marks) (Total 33 marks)
