It focuses on urban design and conservation issues facing the
town centre of Stevenage New Town in Hertfordshire. Stevenage was
one of the first post-war New Towns to be established. In recent
years it has suffered a series of issues including a declining town
centre which is not ‘legible’ on foot, with convoluted, and unclear
pathway arrangements – into and around the town centre and
predominance of design that favours vehicle movement. At the same
time it can be considered a prime example of the heritage of
post-war design and planning and thus its buildings and urban
spaces might be thought to have conservation value.
Question:
How would you engage with the community and other relevant
stakeholders in relation to any urban design and conservation
initiatives?
How would you judge the urban design and conservation quality of
such proposed redevelopment/retrofitting interventions in Stevenage
Town Centre in sustainable planning terms?
ANSWER THESE QUESTION IN DETAILED
