Unit Learning Outcomes: LOZ Determine deflection for simply supported steel beams L03 Calculate the axial load carrying capacity of steel and reinforced concrete columns Assignment Brief and Guidance: Assignment Brief You have recently joined a large multi-disciplinary engineering practice as a trainee Civil Engineer. The company are involved in designing buildings, bridges, roads and many other structures crucial to the economic and social well- being of the country. As part of your training and professional development your employer has asked you to analyse the factors that affect deflection of beams and carrying capacity of columns. Task 1 - The type of support used for a beam has an impact on the deflection. Consider the different types of support available and analyse their effect on deflection. (identify the limitations imposed by standards and codes of practice) Task 2 - Sketch the deflections of the following beams under the applied load and briefly describe the behaviour an how it affects structural stability. (a) Straight Cantilever (6) Propped Cantilever () Encaster beam

(d) Simply Supported beam () Continuous Beam Task 3 - Deflection calculations 1. A 457 x 191 UB98 is simply supported at the ends of a span of 7.Om. The beam carries an inclusive UDL of 350 kN. Calculate the maximum deflection (E for steel = 205000 N/mm). 2. A 406 x 178 UB60 is simply supported at the ends of a span of 6.0m. The beam carries a point load of 150 KN at midspan. Calculate the deflection due to this load, ignoring the weight of the beam, 3. A 356 x 171 UB45 is simply supported at the ends of a span of 5.5m. It carries an inclusive UDL of 15 kN/m and a central point load of 70kN/m. Calculate the maximum deflection 4. A 203 x 133 UB30 is fixed at one end and cantilevered for a distance of 1.2m. The beam supports a point load of 15 kN at its free end. Calculate the maximum deflection ignoring the weight of the beam. kAssessor to provide suitable steel tables for UB. For a range of calculations for the class beam size.loads and spans kan be altered] Task 4 - Describe the factors that affect the load carrying capacity of columns such as slenderness ratio, effective length (type of fixity) and material properties. Analyse the properties of different materials which would be used for carrying loads such as steel, timber and reinforced concrete. Task 5. Calculations 1. Calculate the safe axial load for a 400mm square "short" reinforced concrete column containing eight 25mm diameter bars. Use 1:2.4 mix of concrete (C20 grade) 2. Calculate the compression resistance of a 203 x 203 UC86 stanchion which is 3.6m (between lateral supports). Both ends of the stanchion are held in position but only one is restrained in direction. (Grade S275 steel). Task 6- Your employer has been engaged to build a small 3-4 storey structure. They have asked you to assess the most suitable material to use and the type of support method for the connections between beams and columns Your assessment should include ease and speed of construction, economics, safety and environmental factors. KAssessor to provide tables of dimensions and properties of universal columns. For a range of calculations for the klass column size length and type of fixity can be altered).
