Hotels in Sri Lanka during and after the cOVIC 19 disaster and the post-COVID 19 disaster
Field knowledge and skills management issues
Background According to the Lonely Planet quote, Sri Lanka was set to become the number one tourist destination in the world in early 2019, setting the stage for a sudden revival in the entertainment and tourism industry. Even then, tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka were steadily rising, which gave rise to many hopes for stakeholders in the field as well as for every Sri Lankan. Sri Lanka for Tourist Arrivals The tourism industry has made many promising projections in the short and medium term. April Easter Sunday Attack and Its Impact The series of Easter Sunday attacks that took place in April again terrorized citizens as well as foreigners. The series of attacks not only caused distress but also created uncertainty and fear among the people regarding the movement. However, it soon became apparent that something like this could happen anywhere in the world, and gradually the movement resumed, showing signs of receding to a minimum of normalcy. Then in early 2020, the COVID 19 pandemic affected the world
It had a severe impact on almost the entire field. Due to the obvious factors of travel restrictions and morbidity, the impact was felt in the transport, entertainment and hotel sectors. Today, in the face of the third wave, there is even uncertainty as to when this situation will end. Everyone sees the light at the end of the tunnel but no one has a definite idea of your length.
The hotel industry in Sri Lanka is facing the daunting challenge of maintaining infrastructure and paying salaries in the hope that the current situation in the hotel industry will improve soon.
However, at a time when Sri Lanka as a country is managing the first and second wave somewhat effectively, the authorities have relaxed control measures against the spread of the virus and delegated more responsibility for controlling its spread to the public. It gave the people of the country more freedom to travel and 8o go w 20 25 3w about interesting offers in hotels.
(Motivated with the hotels' attractive offers).
The authorities also decided to allow tourists from selected countries to enter the country under proper control and guidelines for the purpose of sustaining women and the economy.
Current situation
Recently, however, the hotel industry has taken a different path. Due to the overcapacity of the hospitals and facilities in the country, the hotels were converted into quarantine centers. This gave hotels the opportunity to be proactive, maintaining infrastructure and paying salaries. In the past, we have seen the military intervening in such activities. With the end of the Thirty Years' War, the strength and capabilities of the military were used to improve infrastructure.
The current challenge is whether the hotels are operating within their limits (their capabilities, knowledge, skills and competencies). By this
Serious problems are likely to arise in the field today as well as in the future.
Talent Retention: Talented, alternative jobs due to problems in the hotel industry
Job Opportunities Focus on Entrepreneurship, as well as their own start-ups. This has already caused problems and will continue to this hotel
The field is at risk of losing talent.
Skill Deterioration:
Hotels are at the active level but the skills they use (Skill Set) are far below the core skills set of the hotel industry. They do not regularly perform significant tasks such as FB Skills, Culinary Skills, Front Office Skills, and Housekeeping Skills. If this situation persists, there is a risk of significant talent decline, and in the future as a whole.
Will lead to the decline of the field. The hotel industry needs to be up-to-date on the use of knowledge and skills and to adapt them to suit today and tomorrow. This can be described as an important challenge facing the industry today.
Threat of losing Tacit Knowledge:
Talent and skills gained through experience that is difficult to explain in words are the knowledge possessed by those who are experienced in the field.
Unfortunately, this is not the case with the company and it is often lost along with the talented people who leave the company. The departure of talented senior experienced staff means that there is a shortage of experienced staff for coaching. This situation directly affects the mentoring and growth of employees and second line employees. We continue to see a tendency for people with experience in the field to leave and start their own startups.
Collaborative work environment concept "Collaborative work environment concept": A collaborative work environment in which employees contribute to a common vision and support each other. However, this concept is being challenged today in an environment of short-term goals rather than a long-term commitment to a common vision. People are uncertain about their jobs and as a result of increasing stress there are signs that a group of people are becoming more self-centered instead of supporting each other and working as a team.
(Looking Ahead)
There is no doubt that Sri Lanka will be considered one of the most interesting destinations in the post-Corona era if we look at the way epidemics have been managed and put things into action as before. We see the light at the end of the tunnel but we still have no idea how far the tunnel is. The tourism and hotel industry in Sri Lanka needs to retain their talented people and look back on the bad times. While focusing on creating a learning environment that allows them to retain confidence in their field and add value to it, investments should be made to retain talented people by enhancing their skills. It is imperative that new technology be used to engage, motivate and motivate people to pursue continuous education as well as the desire to develop their knowledge and skills.
