Jennifer is not too comfortable with computers. She grew up in a farm and was least exposed to the latest technologies among her friends Although she secured impressive scholarships for her higher studies due to her record of academic excellence, the use of computers and software were not her strong points even though she was working to improve her skills in their use. After earning an MBA degree, she started her own business, in the organic food business. The business soon grow and her company became one of the largest suppliers of organic food products in the state. With the growth, the complexity of her business grew as well. She presently employs more than 2,000 permanent employees and her company owns four warehouses and 10 semi-tractor-trailers. Her supply-chain transports products that value more than $50,000 each day. However, the increasing complexity has given rise to a lot of problems that the company faces on a daily basis including: managing many employees; keeping up with the highly variable supply and demand and storing the highly perishable inventory are just a few of the many issues to be managed In view of the increasing complexity, her top operations and finance managers suggested to her that the company completely automate all aspects of the business. They suggested implementing something called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) which in their view would help significantly in dealing with the complexities of their company This system, as explained by her managers, will integrate different functions including Human Resources Marketing, Finance, Accounting and Operations. The data would be fed into the system at different and processed information would be provided to managers in the form of useful reports that they would participate in designing. For example, the sales people can food in the product requirement required to fill sales orders and instantly the purchasing department will have an updated list of how much raw materials need to be procured. Without such a system, this information flow takes days, and as a result, customer orders are delayed However, Jennifer still had hesitations due to her historical insecurity with computers and software. She believes that since she has been able to successfully manage the business up to this point, she would be able to do so in the future without the computers and software Moreover, she is not aware that her competitors using any similar tochnology and the cost of setting up the system and maintaining it is expensive Questions (please provide the reasoning behind your answers): 1. What are the pros and cons of implementing the new high-technology computer and software into Jennifer's company? 2. Should Jennifer, in spite of her fear of technology, go ahead with the recommended changes in the hopes of making her company even more competitive in future years?
