Boston Home Good Company produces sturdy, wooden footstools of
solid oak or plywood. The demand for footstools is about the same
regardless of the wood used. Plywood is less expensive but results
in more waste. Analysts in the company have estimated the following
production function for making the footstools:
Q = 0.10X2 + 0.12Y2 + 0.0005XY
Where: Q = number of footstools produced per day
X = board feet of plywood used =20
Y = board feet of oak wood used = 40
Material costs to the company are $6.00 per board foot for
plywood and $8.00 per board foot for oak. The footstools sell for
the price of $15.
