Many people after their Biology courses remember 32-36 ATP. It's a fact. We remember. But we don't necessarily understand WHY. So part of the reason has to do with the NADH's that were created in Glycolysis. They will move into the mitochondria and they will be used in either Citric Acid Cycle (CAC) or Electron Transport Chain (ETC). Here's the trick though. NADH does NOT have a transporter OR Channel to get into the cell. There is no doorway or window for it to mass through the mitochondrial membrane. It is also so big it doesn't pass through the membrane because of selective permeability. BUT if we account for electrons the ones' on NADH from cytosol glycolysis must contribute.
