Instructions For this assignment you will need a calculator, a copy of the Evolution of Populations lecture, and a piece of scratch paper to make the required calculations. Your calculations MUST be typed into this document and downloaded to the dropbox by the due date. Points will be deducted for uploacing scanned, handwritten results or by turning in a format other than Word. Question 1- Calculating Alele Frequencies (4 pts) You observe a population of mice coded for by one locus with two alleles, black (B) and white (b). Heterozygotes are grey. Using a calculator, the equation given in class, and following the method used in class, calculate the frequencies of the black and white alleles based on a population with the following phenotypes: - 126 homozygous black mice (BB) - 95 heterozygous grey mice (Bb) - 55 homozygous white mice (bb) Find the frequency of the black and white alleles. Frequency of B : Frequency of b : Question 2- Calculating Hardy Weinberg ( 6 pts) You are observing a population with the following allele frequencies: - A=0.83 - a=0.17 Using a calculator, the Hardy-Weinberg equation, and following the method used in class, calculate Hardy-Weinberg using the allele frequencies above. Round your findings to the fourth decimal point. and write them into the correct spaces below. p2= 2pq= q2=
WW=256 Frequency W=0.61 WWx=215 Frequency w=0.39 Ww=135 The Hardy Weinberg Results were - p2=0.3721 - 2pq=0.4752 - q2=0.1521 Using a calculator and following the methodology used in class, convert the Hardy-Weinberg results to Expected Results Question 4- Calculating the Chi-Square (12 points total) Using the mice example from question 1, enter the number of observed individuals into the table below (1 pt. each, 3 pts, total). Note the Expected Results have been provided for you. Now, using a calculator, the Chi-Square formula, and the methodology learned in lecture, calculate each Chi-Square value and enter it into the correct space ( 2 pts. each, 6 pts. Total). Sum all the Chi square values (1 gt). Then answer the thought question below (a simple yes or no with a sentence or two will sufficel). Based on the results above compared to the critical value of 3.841, is this population of mice in HardyWeinberg equilibrium? Why or why not? (2 pts)
