Cochlear Implants (Readings: AMA, Code
of Medical Ethics: Consent, Crouch, “Letting deaf People
be Deaf” and Tucker, “Deaf Culture”) (8.25 points)
Meghan and Harry are not sure if they should get a cochlear
implant for their infant who was born profoundly deaf. Meghan and
Harry are hearing but several members of their extended family are

child’s doctors strongly recommend they get a cochlear implant for
the child as soon as possible. Meghan and Harry’s deaf family
members, however, are pressuring them to wait.
