Poinys X and Y are not physically accessible, but they are visible from A and B. Each of the points A and B is clearly visible from the other. The length AB ( distance between A and B ) can be measured directly; but no other distance between any two of the four points can be measured directly. Angles enclosed by the lines of sight from an accessible point can be measured. 2.1 introduce short notation for angles and distances involved, and, using trigonometry, give a formula for the length XY (distance between X and Y ) in terms of length AB and angles that can be measured directly. 2.2 Choose the value 100 for length AB, choose different acute angles between 0∘ and 60∘ as values for the angles you are using in the formula in 2.1, and, using the calculator, compute the value of length XY.
