Question 6
Figure 10 shows the first floor plan of a residentialbuilding. It is proposed that the structure will be of reinforcedconcrete column, beam and slab construction. Preliminary design hasshown that thickness of slab is 150mm, beams are 150mm x 300 mm(width x depth) and columns are 150mm x 200mm.
Loads
Dead load for finishes, screed, rendering and services =1.5 kN/m2
Dead load for partition wall= 3 kN/m2
Imposed load = 5 kN/m2
Durability and Fire Resistance
The environmental conditions are moderate and the numberof hours of fire resistance is 2hrs. For concrete cover, thefollowing values were used 30mm for slabs, 35 mm for beams, and 40mm for columns.
Material Properties
The compressive strength of concrete for the design is30N/mm2 and the yield strength of steel is 250N/mm2 for beams andslabs whiles column is 460 N/mm2.
a) Calculate the design load
b) Design the slab between gridlines 6-7 and G-G1. (Use12mm bars)
c) Why is concrete reinforced with steel?
