An electric motor exerts a torque of 800 N.m on the steel shaft ABCD when it is rotating at a constant speed, as shown in Figure Q2. The steel shaft has modulus of rigidity, 77GPa and maximum shear stress of 60MPa. Current design specifications require that the diameter of the solid shaft be uniform from A to D as well as that the angle of twist between A and D not to exceed 1.5∘. a. Identify the minimum diameter of shaft that can be used. b. A hollow steel shaft of the same diameter as in part (a) is proposed for the replacement of shaft ABCD in the future. Predict the impact of this change on the elastic section modulus of the shaft.
