A commercial heat pump is used to maintain a building at 75∘F when the outside temperature is 100∘F. Because of heat losses through the walls and fenestrations, this will require a cooling load of 45000Btu/hr. In order to receive an Energy Star rating by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), heat pumps of this size that have been manufactured since 2004 must have a seasonal average COP value (called SEER) of at least 13Btu/Wh. (a) Assuming that the COP is constant during the entire season, what is the maximum power that an Energy Star heat pump can use under these conditions? kW (b) The SEER rating is used with real systems. If, instead, the heat pump had no irreversibilities at all, what would be the electricity usage? kW (Hint: though the picture above shows a heat pump, the actual appliance is an air conditioner. Make sure you are using the correct definition for COP.)
