If I have a component in an engine that is water cooled on theback at 0 °C and 50 ° C on the front. If this creates a thermalstress of 20 MPa within the component due to thermal expansion, estimate the size of the largest flaw (in meters) that thesubstrate can tolerate without breaking. Assume the theoreticalstrength of alumina is 0.1 GPa and its effective surface energy is0.01 J m-2 and its elastic modulus is 90 GPa.
