Using a stainless-steel tube, an experiment was arranged to investigate the combustion characteristics of gaseous hydrogen and oxygen. Filling was done using partial pressure technique in such a way that one mole of fuel and three moles of oxygen were admitted to the tube, and both were mixed using a circulation pump to form homogeneous mixture. After that a sufficient ignition energy was given from one end to start the reaction. In the process, neglect dissociation and assuming the combustion flame accelerate from deflagration to detonation within the tube length for an initial state pressure of 1 atm. For temperature, assume the initial to be at 25∘C and final condition to be at 1727∘C. Given: For reactants, MW =24.5 kg/kmol, specific heat at constant pressure =1.19 kJ/kg.K For products, MW=28.0 kg/kmol, specific heat at constant pressure =1.49 kJ/kg⋅K Estimated heat release =2470 kJ/kg. For the system described above: i. calculate the detonation velocity of the mixture, ii. explain what is meant by detonation to deflagration phenomena, and iii. suggest how the experiment could be improved to hasten the formation of detonation wave within the tube length.
