1. Problem Description A Centrifugal pump is one of the common types of dynamic pumps. It comes in various sizes for a wide range of applications. The presence of bends or elbows in the pump system affects the performance of a centrifugal pump. Therefore, extensive study is needed to investigate the effects of bends or elbows on a centrifugal pump's performance. In this project, you are required to perform a design calculation and analysis of a CENTRIFUGAL PUMP based on Fluids Mechanics II topics. The theory regarding the Pelton turbine can be obtained from Chapter 14 in Fluid Mechanics Fundamentals and Applications, 2nd edition, by Yunus A. Cengel and John M. Cimbala. A typical example of a centrifugal pump setup is shown in Figure 1.
2. Objectives of the project - To investigate the relationship between pressure head, flow rate, power consumed, and efficiency for a pump. - To compare the performance curves of different pumps. 3. Design Calculations) To have a uniform marking scheme for the project, please follow the following steps when presenting your design calculations. [Note: - Clearly show all the design calculations] 3.1. First, perform design calculations of a single pump performance based on the given data given in Table 1. Table 1: Single Pump
3.2. Second, perform design calculations and performance of two pumps connected in series based on the given data given in Table 2 . Table 2: Pumps connected in Series 3.3. Third, perform design calculations and performance of two pumps connected in parallel based on the given data given in Table 3. Table 3: Pumps connected in Parallel 4. Discussions 4.1. Plot and discuss graphs of the pump characteristic, efficiency, and pump power output curves against flow rate for a. single pump, b. pumps connected in series, and c. pumps connected in parallel. 4.2. For direct comparison plot and discuss all the three pump characteristic curves - single pump, series configuration, and parallel configuration- in one graph. 4.3. If you use the pumps in a system represented by the following system equation Hp=1.5+87500∗Q2, Generate system data, then plot and discuss the pump system curves for single pump, series configuration, and parallel configuration- in one graph
4.4. Complete pump system Provide the sketch of the designed complete pump system Bonus: - Extra marks will be provided for those who provide AutoCAD or SolidWorks drawings of the complete pump system. 4.5. Make a discussion on the possibility of cavitation for each of your pump system. 4.6. Other data if available Note: - All results included in the report should be discussed. 5. Conclusions - Draw your own conclusion - Comment on the operating point of the pumps. Report presentation Strictly follow the provided Project Report Rubric for the report preparation. Submit the report in the designated link in Kalam.
