MCEN2003 Machine Dynamics 1. A large electric motor is connected to a gearbox via a worn multi plate clutch consisting of four driven discs with a total of 8 friction surfaces. The inner and outer diameters of the contact surfaces are 270 and 420 mm respectively, and the coefficient of friction is 0.27. (a) Find the axial force required to transmit 150 kW at 3750 RPM. (5 Marks) (b) Using the axial force from (a), calculate the power capable of being transferred by the clutch at engine speeds from 1000 RPM up to 5000 RPM, in steps of 1000 RPM, and hence draw a scaled graph of Power (kW) vs Engine speed (RPM), showing all working. Comment on factors that affect the power transferred, including the wom state of the clutch. (8 Marks) (c) Find the contact pressures at the inner and outer radii. (12 Marks) (Total 25 Marks)
