Task Part 1: You are the new safety officer in a lab that handles radioactive materials. As you begin, it is your job to prepare the lab to conduct all of their experiments safely. 19 • Choose three different elements or isotopes as radioactive samples. Each sample should emit a different type of radiation so all three are represented: alpha, beta, and gamma. • For each element or isotope, describe the protective equipment (clothing, barriers, etc.) that will be necessary to keep researchers safe. o Keep in mind, you don't want to over-prescribe safety measures. Unnecessary safety equipment could increase costs and get in the way of experiments. • To encourage researchers to adhere to these recommendations, add some words of warning for each element or isotope. Which ones should they be most worried about? e Part 2: Now that experiments are running smoothly and safely. You are asked to find solutions to store the radioactive samples. • Find the half-life for each element or isotope from Part 1. • Imaginary safety protocols I just invented say that radiation levels become "safe" when they drop below 10% of the original value. How long must you store each type of sample before it becomes "safe" (at least according to these safety protocols)?
