Probability in Gambling Roulette Roulette is a game that can be found at many casinos around the world. There can be slight variations in the game depending on where in the world, so we will be using American Roulette for this activity. A ball is spun on the wheel to see in which slot it will land. The probability of the ball landing in any particular slot is the same. The board next to the wheel shows each type of bets you can make. If you place a bet on 17, then the ball would need to land on 17 to win, otherwise you lose your bet. If you place your bet on Even, then the ball would need to land on any even number for you to win, otherwise you lose your bet, and so forth. The three "2 to 1" spots allow you to be the whole row of numbers, e.g. the bottom 2 to I would win if the ball lands on either 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, or 34. There are other types of bets that allow you to split you bet between two or more spots on the board, but for this activity we will only consider bets made on one spot at a time. 90 9988 SECARABAO 34 BLACK EVEN 000 Probability of Winning First, using the wheel, find the probability of winning for each type of bet: Complete the Table P100) – P9) = P(19)-P29)- PRow 1) = PO) - P(10) - P(20) - PC30) PRow 2) Plt)= P(11)=P(21)=P(31) PRow 3)= P2) - P(12) - P22)=P(32) Pal to 12) P03) - P(13) - P(23) -P33) - A1360 24) - P(4) - P14) - P24) - P(34) - P 25 10 36) PS) - PS) -25) -P35) - PvEven) 6) P116) (26) P36) POdd) 7) - P17) N27) Pl to 18) - Red) P[8)= P18):28)=P419 to 36) Black)=
Payouts/Losses Next, different bets have different odds for winning, so the payout is different. In American roulette, the odds are: Straight up (betting a single number) = 35 to 1 Row=2 to 1 Dozen=2 to 1 Even/Odd = 1 to 1 Black/Red = 1 to 1 • High (19-36) / Low (1-19) = 1 to 1 This means if you were to make a bet at 1 to 1 odds, you would not only get back your initial bet, but also win an amount equivalent to your bet, e.g. if you bet $1 on a l to I bet, you would get back your $1 plus win another S1. If you were to make a bet with 2 to 1 odds, you would get your bet plus twice your initial bet. Let's play! Pretend you arrive at the roulette table with $100. You will place 5 unique bets. Tell me the amount you are betting (something between $1 and S100) and on which spot you are placing the bet. For each of those 5 bets, flip a coin to see if you won or lost and update your balance the amount of money you have). Make sure each bet is on a different spot and don't be all your money in a single game! Example Game = I bet $500 on Black. If the ball lands on something other than a black (a loss), then the house keeps my $500 and I walk away S500 poorer. If the ball lands on a black (a win), then I get my $500 back and the house has to give me an additional $500, so I walk away $500 richer than I was before the game. (My balance will depend on whether I won or lost!) Complete the Table with your Bets: Starting Balance: 5100 Game 1 Game 2 Game 3: Game 4 Game 5: What is your final balance? If you have winnings, what would you do with this money?
