The purpose of a study by Brown and Persley (A-8) was to characterize acute hepatitis A in patients more than 40 years old. They performed a retrospective chart review of 20 subjects who were diagnosed with acute hepatitis A, but were not hospitalized. Of interest was the use of age (years) to predict bilirubin levels (mg/d). The following data were collected Bilirubin (mg/dl) Bilirubin (mg/d1) Age (years) 78 Age (years) 44 7 7.5 72 12.9 42 1.8 45 0.8 81 14.3 78 3.8 59 8 47 64 14.1 3.5 50 48 10.9 5.1 46 57 16.5 12.3 42 52 3.5 1 48 5.6 58 5.2 45 52 5.1 1.9 Prepare the scatter diagram for the above data. Plot the lines of best fit. Does the scatter diagram exhibit a linear relationship between the Age and bilirubin level of the patients? (1) Estimate the age of the patient if the bilirubin level has been observed as 13.5 mg/dl by finding the appropriate line of regression. (i) Estimate the bilirubin level if the age of the patient is 65 years by finding the appropriate line of regression, (iv)Calculate the mean and S.D. for both the Age and the bilirubin level of the given sample. (5) Calculate 99% confidence interval for the average bilirubin level. (vi)Is there a real difference between the averages of age and bilirubin level for the given sample at 5% level of significance?
