2.2 A double-drum winder is used as a stage hoist for the sinking of a vertical shaft. The stage is suspended in the vertical shaft by two winding ropes in double purchase, the fixed ends being anchored in the headgear - see sketch below. Each rope has a strength of 890 KN when new, and a mass of 5,38 kg/m. The empty stage has a mass of 18 360 kg. The minimum factor of safety permitted for ropes is 5 at discard, but allowance must be made for 5% deterioration before discard. The shaft is being sunk to a depth of 1830 m below the headgear sheaves. Double- drum winder stage Calculate the maximum mass load that can be placed on the stage, including persons and material (8)
