A centrifugal pump having an impeller diameter of 50 cm
operating at a speed of 1200 rpm is to be installed in a water
pipeline system. The pump has a shutoff head of 60 m and can
provide a head 24 m at a flow rate of 60 L/s; The pipeline system
consists of:
• 0.25 km long pipes with an internal diameter of 200 mm
• an inlet protruding into the supply tank, 1 m below the normal
water level
with kinlet = 0.8
• four threaded regular 90° elbows with each having kelbow =
1.5
• one gate valve, kvalve = 0.15
• a flush outlet into the discharge tank 0.5 m below the water
level in the
tank, koutlet = 1
The discharge outlet is positioned 20 m above the supply inlet.
If we can
assume a constant Fanning friction factor of f = 0.005,
determine the following:
(i) The system curve in the form: HS = Z + C Q2 (when the gate
valve is
fully open) (6)
(ii) The pump performance curve in the form: HP = H0 – B Q2
(with Q in m3/s) (3)
(iii)The operating point for the pump in the pipeline when the
gate valve
is fully open. (4)
(iv)The power consumption of the pump, if the pump efficiency is
75%
