In dentistry, there exist a lot of needs of high-strength and
high-precision dental crowns made of zirconia. Fig.1 illustrates
the dental crown prosthetics. The precision level requirement for
these prosthetics is usually about ~0.1mm level. Zirconia is
considered a desirable material due to various factors. For
example, zirconia has high hardness, high wear resistance and
exceptional corrosion resistance, all critical for the
“application”. On the other hand, although zirconia is not the most
difficult ceramics for processing, it is still not an easy one.
Discuss about the process routes used to fabricate the zirconia
dental crown prosthetics, and provide justifications of the
selection of processes. Note that the fabrication is likely a
multi-step process that involve more than one manufacturing
technology.
