In this study, you will investigate voltage, current and power
errors made by short and medium transmission line models by
comparing them to the Equivalent-π model (exact model). For this,
you will consider a transmission line with different lengths
between 0 and 500 km. For different lengths of the transmission
line, you will investigate voltage, current and power for short,
medium, and long transmission line models.
The parameters of Transmission Line:
Line Impedance : z = 0.xyzd 80/km
Line Admitance : y = x.yzd 10-6 90
1/.km
Receiving-End Voltage: 𝑉𝑅 = 154 kV (line-to-line)
Receiving-End Apparent Power: 𝑆𝑅 = 100 MVA
(three-phase power)
Receiving-End Load : Inductive load with 0.7 power factor.
You may use integer values all dissimilar for x , y , z , and d
which must be different than your friend’s selections. The integer
values may range from 1 to 9 excluding zero. Analysis:
For the parameters given above, sending end line-to-line voltage
magnitude, current magnitude and apparent power will be
investigated for the three models of transmission line. The
calculations must be done by increasing transmission line length 10
km in each step from 0 to 500 km. The models that you will be using
are short (Lumped Series Impedance), medium (Nominal-π), and long
transmission line (Equivalent-π) models we studied in the class.
Based on your findings, you must draw graphics which will compare
the line-to-line sending end voltage, line current, and power for
the increasing lengths of the transmission line for the three
different models. The x axis of the graphics must be the length of
the transmission line and the y axis has to be one of the
magnitudes of line-to-line voltage, line current or complex power
at sending-end. You may also need to compare the phase angles of
the three. Since Equivalent- π model is the exact model, draw the
errors made for magnitude of voltage and magnitude of current at
sending-end by using approximate models with respect to the line
length.
How to Write Your Report:
You have to write the report in the computer (no hand writing) and
you MUST include the following sections in your report. If you do
not write the name of the following sections as header it will not
be counted.
1. Goal of The Project
2. Introduction (Here, you need to explain the three models we have
studied for transmission lines.)
3. Transmission Line Parameters (The xyzd values, line impedance,
line admittance you have used in the project must be given as a
table.)
4. Comparing The Models (In this section, you have to analyze the
models and describe how you have done the analysis and give the
figures and discussion of the figures. You need to compare the
models in one figure, do not use three figures for three different
models. The eight figures that you need to draw are
1- Magnitude of sending-end line-to-line voltage of three models as
a function of line length in one figure.
2- Magnitude of sending-end line current of three models as a
function of line length in one figure.
3- Sending-end apparent power of three models as a function of line
length in one figure.
4- Phase of sending-end voltage of three models as a function of
line length in one figure.
5- Phase of sending-end current of three models as a function of
line length in one figure.
6- Phase of complex power of three models as a function of line
length in one figure.
7- Voltage magnitude error as a function of line length
8- Current magnitude error as a function of line length)
5. Conclusion
(Write a conclusion on which models to use for which lengths for
your transmission line parameter and also compare them to what we
said in the class (For example, in the class we said that for less
than 80 km length of lines we can used short line model. Does that
comply with your findings? if not give the length of line which
short line model can be used according to your chosen parameter. Do
the same for middle and long transmission lines). At least, 20
lines of conclusion must be written)
