A square storage tank is founded at a depth of 1.5m in a deep
layer of clay as shown in the figure below: Side view Top view 18 m
19.2 m The external edge length of the tank is 19.2 m in length and
the internal edge length of the tank is 18 m.
The tank has a weight of 12.5 MN when empty. The properties of
the clay are given in the table below:
Undrained shear strength (cu) Effective cohesion (c') Angle of
shearing resistance (') Saturated unit weight (sat) Unit weight
of the water is 9.81kN/m3. 28 kPa 0 kPa 26° 18.5 kN/m3 a) Using the
Eurocode 7 GEO limit state Design Approach 1 – Combination 1
(A1+M1+R1) calculate the depth (h) to which the tank could be
safely filled with a liquid with design unit weight of 9.5 kN/m3,
in the short term. The weight of the liquid in the tank can be
considered as a permanent action.
