Silumko owns an online sportswear business, named OntheGo!
Through the website customers can order and have delivered a range
of tracksuits, T-shirts, running shoes, and other sporting
paraphernalia. He started his small business five years ago.
Initially, he worked alone on an online website he designed
himself. However, as the number of orders started to increase, he
knew he had to start employing some help. Therefore, he employed a
Personal Assistant and two Sales Representatives that managed the
orders and dealt with his suppliers. This gave him some free time,
which he needed to complete his Bachelor of Commerce in Business
Management.
Silumko has recently graduated, and he now wants to take his
venture to the next level. He plans to adopt a growth and expansion
strategy. Previously, Silumko was a ‘middle-man’. He purchased
goods from suppliers, and then rebranded and marketed them through
his website. This enabled him to sell the goods for a small profit.
However, now that Silumko has completed his business management
degree, he has learned a great deal about running a successful
small business. He does not want to be the ‘middle-man’ anymore. He
plans on changing the strategy of his business and starting a new
venture. In this business, he will be the sole supplier of these
goods. In other words, Silumko plans to produce, market, and sell
these goods himself. His new venture means he produces and sells
his own goods on his online sportswear website.
A Human Resource planning process has revealed that Silumko
needs to hire more staff with skills and qualifications he has not
employed before. He needs to employ Clothing Designers, Buyers of
the various goods he needs as well as Cutters and Machine Sewers.
His existing staff also need to be retrained to be able to adjust
their skills set to the new strategy of the business.
