Developing and capacity building is an integral part of your job
as a leader. It doesn't only apply to only new hires, and it
applies to current and senior leaders as well. Research has shown
that people need training and support throughout their careers to
develop their skills and continue working effectively (Mind Tools
Content Team & Team, 2020).
In my agency, we did not provide any additional training or tools
to newly promoted supervisors/managers until recently. We only
offered a water down two-week supervisor training program
facilitated by those who lack formal leadership/facilitator
training. It was evident that the onus of training and development
was the individual's responsibility. The agency has recently
started making more resources available to our staff.
For example, LinkedIn Learning has proven to be a valuable learning
platform for our staff to use. In addition, the agency has
encouraged those on our teams to submit for all training and
development opportunities that align with the agency's strategic
initiatives and goals.
One of the many things that I have been providing staff under my
leadership team is various articles from Harvard Business Review
and Forbes on leadership and other topics that would complement
their current job duties. I feel that it is my responsibility to
aid in increasing the job knowledge and capacity of those on my
team. In doing so, I hope that they too will do the same for their
staff. Learning, teaching, and capacity building are passions I
take great pride in.
My goals are to put plans in place so that we don't lose those
essential skills and knowledge-base. This will be done through a
good succession plan where others pass on their experience and
knowledge base to others as they retire or explore other
ventures.
Does the writer make some good points on the tools that is
available for his/her team? Why or Why not? What other suggestions
or tools can potentially prove to be beneficial?
