Give the following problem a try. If you get stuck, here is one way to work it: Essential Solution Video. A simply supported beam carries two concentrated loads of P = 2.8 kN at the locations shown. The beam dimensions are L1 = 1.3 m and L2 = 2.9 m. The cross section consists of a wooden timber [E = 12.5 GPa) reinforced by a steel plate [E = 200 GPa) attached to its bottom surface. The wooden timber has dimensions of bw = 65 mm and dw = 160 mm. The steel plate dimensions are bs = 115 mm and ts=5 mm. Use the transformed-area method to transform the steel plate into an equivalent amount of wood and then determine (a) the maximum bending moment in the span. (b) the appropriate modular ration for use in the transformed-area method. (c) the vertical distance from point to the neutral axis of the composite beam. (d) the moment of inertia of the transformed section about the z axis. (e) the bending stress in the wood at point H. (f) the bending stress in the steel at point K. bw H Р Р Wood y dw A B с D L1 L2 L Is K Steel bs
