3. Consider 2 spheres approaching each other. Sphere A starts at
the origin and is moving at a velocity of vx = 0.6 m/s and vy = 1.4
m/s. It has a radius of 6 cm. Sphere B has a radius of 14 cm. and
starts at rest at x = 5m and y = 0.4m. Sphere B accelerates with ax
= -1.12 m/s2 and ay = 0.992 m/s2 . The coefficient of restitution
for the spheres is 0.65.
a) Find position of A and B when they collide. This is hard to
solve. I used successive iteration to solve the equations – i.e.
guessing.
b) Find the line of impact and the plane of impact. Draw them on
a simple graph. b) Find the velocity of the spheres immediately
after impact in terms of the impact coordinates and in terms of the
original x and y coordinates.
c) Assuming acceleration goes to zero after impact for both
spheres, find their position in terms of the original x and y at t
= 6 seconds
