2. Consider two cars travelling on the highway. Car A suddenly
slows to 23 mph. The driver of car B is watching you tube videos
and rear ends the first car while travelling at 67 mph. Treat the
collision as a center line impact.
a) Find the velocities after impact if car A is a Honda CRX with
a mass of 1045 kg and car B is an Escalade with a mass of of 2636
kg. Assume the coefficient of restitution is 0.35. b) Assuming the
drivers are firmly held in their seats, and that the force of the
collision lasts for 0.8 seconds, determine the average acceleration
each driver experiences as result of the crash. Compare that
acceleration to gravitational acceleration.
c) Repeat the exercise in (b) except switch cars so that the CRX
is travelling at 67 mph and it rear ends the Escalade travelling at
23 mph. e = 0.35.
d) Repeat either (b) or (c) but assume the coefficient of
restitution is zero.
e) Based on your calculations, discuss whether e should be
closer to zero or closer to 1 if you want to design safer cars.
