The London Eye first turned on December 31, 1999 to celebrate the new millennium. It was intended to be a temporary attraction, but its popularity soon made it a permanent and iconic part of the London skyline. Each passenger capsule represents one of the 32 London boroughs. The diameter of its wheel is 120 m (394 ft). Each of the ovoidal capsules weighs 11 tons and can carry 25 people. The wheel completes one revolution in 30 minutes - this slow rotation rate means that it not have to stop to take on passengers, i.e., passengers can easily walk on and off the moving capsules at ground level.
