Four species, Gremlins, Wiggles, Nertz, and Chompers are thought to be closely related. Review the Amino Acids differences table (Exercise II) showing the percentages of amino acid differences for a particular protein which is found in all four of these species. [In other words, the table tells you that if you compare the amino acids in this protein for the Gremlins and the Wiggles, you will discover that 3% of the amino acids are different; that means that 97% of the amino acids are the same. This is the same kind of information you have just been accumulating for the mammals in Exercise 1.] Use the data sheet to record your findings for Exercise II. 1. Which two of these species do you think are the most closely related? Explain how you came to this conclusion. 2. Of the four, which do you figure is the most distantly related to the other three? Why? 3. Examine this little family tree for these four species. There are four numbered blocks in this table, representing our four species. In the blanks on your data sheet, fill in the four species names represented by these blocks. Careful-make sure you pay attention to the way the tree is built. For instance, the names that you fill into spaces 1 and 2 should be the names of the most closely related species. You are building what is called a cladogram or evolutionary tree. You should check out just what a cladogram is by looking at examples in your textbook. (Text Figures 12-14, 12-15, 13- 3) P
