This is an example of a reversible reaction. It is an addition/elimination equilibrium. Actually, it is very similar to the process that we use to make margarine from oils. All natural oils have cis configurations at the double bonds. When hydrogen is added to the oils (unsaturated) to make margarine (mostly saturated), sometimes the reaction reverses but the product is trans instead of cis. These are the trans fats that we worry about in our diets.
