51. The rate of elimination of grain alcohol (ethanol, CH3CH₂OH) from the body depends on the individual and their health. Alcohol is oxidized by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Below are the results of a study of alcohol elimination from the blood for a particular individual. Blood samples were taken periodically and the alcohol concentration in each are measured as mg/dL. The first few data points record the uptake of alcohol in the blood.

100 so 60 [alcohol] (mg/dL) O 0 2 olada O 0 % 4 6 time(hr) S 10 In[alcohol] (mg/dL) 4.8 3.6 2.4 2 O ******* 0 2 X x 4 6 time(hr) XI S 10 1/[alcohol] (mg/dL) 0.4 0.32 0.24 0.16 0.08 O 0 2 O 4 6 time(hr) S 10 a. Draw the structural formula of ethanol. b. What is one dL (deciliter) in units of liters? In units of ml? If the concentration of alcohol is 80 mg/dl, what is the concentration in units of molarity? c. From the graphs, determine the order of alcohol elimination from the blood. Explain how you arrived at your answer. d. What is the rate constant and rate law for the elimination? Show any calculations involved and the correct units. e. Write the concentration-time equation for the elimination of alcohol from blood. f. How can the alcohol blood concentration of an individual be used to determine the concentration hours earlier? (Answers: (b) 0.100 L, 100 ml, 1.7 x 102 Ml; (c) zero; (d) rate= 13 mg/dL-hr)
