1. Fred and Velma have an ongoing argument about which cily has had the hotter summer, Phoenix or Tucson. They've finally agreed that both citles have been hot this summer, but are now focused on which cly is more "hotter than usual" compared to the past. They tried to look up historical temperature data online, but couldn't find a good source in a reasonable amount of time. So they made up the data, their best guess, for mean high temperatures (not the best way to do (il) ) Which cily has had the hioher mean temperature, compared to lis 100 -year mean?
2. Lauren and Ubby are best fifends, but theyre very competitive with each other. They were disappointed when they ended up in different physlos classes. They/d hoped to see who is botter at physics, but now there's just no way to compare their course grades. Uniess ... they convert their final course grades (\%) to z scores!
3. Lauren and Lbby are backd This is their junior year and they both plan to go to grad school. Theyre planning to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), including the physics test. How will they score? They don't really know, but one thing they can do is transform their final course grades (X) In phyecis to GRE scores, as a best guess. Buthow can they do that? They cen start with the z scores, then transform the z scores to the GRE scalo, which has a mean of 600 and standard devation of 100 . What are their best guess GRE-Physics scores?
Feel free to go to the next page and answer the question, using the data in Table 3. Or read the story. ( couldn't help itt The story does have some informative bits about designing and conducting research.) Your choice. Good story though. Hansel and Gretel went for a long walk through the dark and scary woods on a stomy aftemoon. Aong the way, Hansel started collecting acoms for good luck. Gretel, thinking it was a splendid ldea, also started collecting acoms. When they got to a small clearing in the woods, they sat on a large igneous rock and proceeded to ruminate, wondering whether they would ever find their way back home. Then Hansel remembered he and Gretel had been collecting acoms for good luck. The acoms would save theml Hansel counted up his acoms - 32. Gretel counted up her acoms - 19. Hansel scolded Gretel with a deep and furious scoid. But Gratel correctly and patiently polnted out that everyone knows boys have bigger pockets, for collecting snips and snails and puppy dogs' talls and such, whille gin's have smaller pockets t't right for sugar and spice and everything nice - but not acoms, which are poisonous, by thic way. So of course Hansel was able to collect more acoms. It simply was not a fair comparison, normatively speaking. Intrigued but not persuaded by Gretel's theoretical assertion, Hansel suggested they conduct a study to test her hypothesis through empirical observation. "Qulte right," Gretel proclaimed, "we need datal" -And there are probably plenty of grimm folk trouncing about the dark and scary woods on a dismal stormy aftemoon like this, just eager to serve as participants in our research, " Hansel postulated. "True," he continued, "they're a convenlence sample, not a true random sample, but ite the best we can do considering that we're lost and your paucity of acoms appears tikely to keep us lost." So Hansel and Gretel set out to collect data. Approaching every character they met wandering feckless and forlom through the dark and scary woods, they offered up this incentive for participation hif their research: We shall see how many acoms you can fit into your pocket, full to capacily without spilling one. Then we shall use your data along with the data of many others, assuring you of total confidentiality and anonymity, and reporting only aggregate results from our analysla. We shall thus establlish, once and forever, the etemal truth about male and fomale pockot capacities, acom-wise," People lined up to particlpate in their researchl (What else was there to do on such a dismal dreary day?) Litto Red Riding Hood speculated she could fit dozens of acoms in her hood, but no, Gretel insisted che conform to the research protocol. Uttle Red complled; "Okay, sure, lets protect the integrity of your datal But I could ff dozens of dozena." Wandering along, Hansel and Grotel came upon a young girf fast asleep on a log. "She sure is beaulful. And look at those pocketar shouted Hansel. They tried to wake her, with frustrating futility, to add to their data collection. But to no avall, whon suddenly a prince romped along and kreeled down and Wlesed her. Then, realking ho'd been observed, the prince hastoned away with a gully look on his face. Walt, walt," Gretel shouted, "acoms, pocketal We need your datap" That only made the prince run faster. But it aroused the curiosity of the awakened youne giri, who profossed to tiring of the lifo of a princess, preferring instead to punsue a career as a pharmaceutleal researcher, she stufled her pockets with scoms, full if eapacity whthout spilling one, all the while expressing appreclatlon for the epportunity to contibute to the advancement of sclentifle inowledge.
A few moments later, a fightened young gid scampered past in quite a rush. Hansel asked her name, and she shouted "Goldilocks," and then yelped something about lunch, but was gone belore Hansel could explain the purpose of the research to her. A few seconds later three bears bounded by and really wanted to help with the research, really and truly they did, but they were in a hurry, they explained, off to have their lunch. And besides, they had no pockets. The mere mention of lunch awakened a sickly hunger in Hanse. 2 Gretel. They had no food, and set out to see what the dark and scary woods had to oler. By and by they came upon the sweetest litwe house they had ever seen. Whoever bult it had obviously never heard of Home Depot or Lowe's, but rather was well acquainted with the work of Willie Wonka. They approached the sweet structure with caution and desperation, whereupon they came close enough to begin to nibble. A shout erupted from the house. It was not Wille Wonks. Instead, an unimaginably old and docreplt hag of a woman stumbled through the dellcious doonway, a broom stick in one hand and a laptop in the other, stll playing a Youtubo video from a cooking show. Who has been nibbiling? she inquired, with a distinctly academic tone. R-P-research," Hansel stuttered. "A. A. Acoms," Grotel slammered. "P-p-pockete?" Hansel and Gretel pleaded in unison. "Come inside, my dear children," the old hag insisted. There is too much hunger in these dark and scary woods. What s cutside must eventually end up inside. Do come inslde, my dears." Hansel and Gretel entered the yummy abode and were never seen egain. But their research was. The old hag published it in a prestglous refereed joumal, The Grimm Joumal of Comparatve Gendor Reseser, under her name alone, as the sole author and researcher. For all their trouble, Heneel and Gretel spent etemity as a briet footnote on the iast pege, credited only wth "collectich data until they came upon an untimely demise, sprinided with chopped scorna." Here is the highilight of the joumal article:
Hansel collected 32 acoms, Gretel collected 19. Who was better at collecting acoms, nomatively speaking? Hansel or Gretel? - By the way: The first column of numbers is sample sice - important for a table in a joumal article, but useless for you here. Aso, in case you don't know - Hansel is male, Gretal is female.
