International education is a significant industry globally with
many companies devoted to supported to helping international
students enter degree programs overseas. Data on 500 international
students has been collected to provide information on those factors
which affect the Chance of Admission for Indian students seeking to
enter a Masters degree in the United States. Data in the associated
Excel file is provided on several variables including:
• Chance of Admission (%)
• GRE Score – an admissions test which provides a
score between 260 and 340.
• TOEFL – an English language test score out of
120
• University Rating – 1 to 5 with 1 highest
rating
• CGPA – Cumulative Grade Point Average out of
10
• Gender
a. Considering only Chance of Admission data,
choose and construct an appropriate graph to display the
data.
i. Why is this graph appropriate?
ii. What does the graph tell you about typical
scores, spread and shape of the data?
b. Use the Descriptive Statistics function in
Excel to generate common statistics.
i. What are the mean, median and mode for this
data.
ii. Which is most appropriate in describing this
set of data and why?
iii. Are they consistent with the Graph in part
a?
c. Calculate the standard deviation, the
coefficient of variation and the Interquartile Range.
i. What does this tell you about the overall
spread of the data?
d. Construct a Box and Whisker Plot.
i. Are there any outliers?
ii. Add labels to the graph. Are they consistent
with the earlier questions.
e. Use a Pivot Table to calculate the average
CGPA for Males and Females.
i. What can you say about comparative performance
based on this result.
ii. Add University rating to the pivot table. Use
the pivot table to find average CGPA of Males and Females by
university rating. Which rating universities do females perform
best in? (Check: Ave CGPA for females in rating 5 universities is
8.889)
iii. What do you notice about CGPA compared to
university rating. What does this imply about higher rated
universities?
f. Graph the relationship between GRE score and
TOEFL score. Adjust the axes on the graph to help demonstrate the
relationship.
i. From the graph what would you say about how
closely related the two variables are.
ii. Calculate the appropriate statistic to
determine the strength and direction of the relationship between
them and interpret it.
